Dear
Citizens of Haverhill,
As
I write this, our snow plow crews
are out trying to clear and sand
your streets. We have over 140
private plow drivers, and our
entire highway and parks crew of
25 people are out plowing.
After we raised the rates for
plowing, another 40 people signed
up, six of them on the day of the
storm. Preparation for a
storm such as this starts weeks
earlier, as crews make certain
that we have adequate sand and
salt, that our trucks are ready
to go, and that our plans are
ready. Last Sunday, we had a
small storm that allowed our
crews to work out some of the
problems. We have set up a 24
hour snow response hotline 978
374-2364, and our 24 hour snow
response email line, http://www.ci.haverhill.ma.us/departments/highway/plowing.htm.
You can help! Unless it is
an emergency, please keep off the
road Thursday night. When you
park your car Thursday night,
please make every effort to keep
your car off the street. We can
plow your street wider and better
if there are no cars on it. We
have another storm coming Sunday,
and we want to get the roads down
to the pavement so that ice does
not accumulate for the Sunday
storm. Sunday we are once
again declaring a snow
emergency. Please watch the
city web site for details.
Please let us know how we did in
this snow storm. Take a moment
to fill out the customer service
form at the end of this email and
tell us how we can improve our
customer service. In this
edition of the newsletter, we
welcome two new volunteer
writers-- David Matorana and Ana
M. Soria. Thank you to both of
you! Please have a safe and
happy holiday season, Mayor
Jim Fiorentini For updates

are cars parked on the
streets. We urge all
residents who have driveways
or other places to park to
park their vehicles off the

Mayor James J. Fiorentini
announced the creation of the
"94 Emerson Street Fire
Victims Fund" in the wake of
the early morning fire that
dislocated several individuals

"I
ask citizens to join with me

Election Day
By:
David
Martorana, intern, Mayor's office
Juniors
and seniors in the National Honor
Society at Haverhill High
volunteered at seven precinct
locations in Haverhill during the
Nov. 6 election.
"Definitely,
[it was a success.] Now, we have
a timeline and will do it again
during the Presidential
election," said Kalister
Green-Byrd of the Greater
Haverhill League of Women Voters.
City
Clerk Margaret Toomey said,
"It is a great example of
civic involvement. It would
continue the commitment of the
existing poll workers."

Faces of Haverhill
Anna
M. Soria: "A Place for New
Poets"
By:
Ana M. Soria, volunteer in
Mayor's office
A
resident of fifteen years, Anna
Soria, is not a "new
face" in Haverhill.But as
a member of Greater Haverhill
Poets, she states: "We do
welcome new poets who have a
fresh approach.Also, we
encourage people with an
appreciation for-or
serious interest in-poetry to
join."
Originally
from Atlanta, Georgia, Anna
discovered the poetry group
several years ago, after her move
to Bradford.Her poems have
appeared in three of their books.
Anna
also served as project manager
for the poets' recently published
anthology, Voices of Haverhill,
honoring John Greenleaf
Whittier's 200th Birthday and the
city of Haverhill.
"We
want to bring more cultural
events into the area," she
said."Haverhill offers an
opportunity for writers, poets
and artists to grow and
thrive." Poetry is
not her only focus; Anna is a
freelance writer and
photographer.She also enjoys
performing with Improvabilities,
a local comedy improv troupe.
Ana
Soria is a volunteer at the
Mayor's office and contributes to
the Mayor's newsletter.

third Saturday of each month at

A Yen for
Good Sushi
By:Ana
M. Soria, volunteer, Mayor's
office
As Elva
Chen says, "It's the
fish-not the dish," the
customer chooses, when looking
over the Sushi menu at Wang's
Table Restaurant.She and Jeff
Wang are managers of the Chinese
and Japanese restaurant, located
at 46 Merrimack Street. The
family came to the Haverhill area
from the southern coast of China. When Kam Wang, the owner,
considered locations for his
restaurant a year ago, this one
offered plenty of public parking
nearby, and word-of-mouth has
attracted customers from as far
as Newburyport.
This
informal dining establishment
comfortably seats fifty
customers, but everything on the
menu can be take-out or, for
minimum order amounts and a
one-dollar charge, delivered
within three miles.
Menu
temptations offered on both
Chinese and Japanese menus are
wide-ranging, including Lunch
Specials, with most priced
reasonably.If ordering Sushi
and you prefer it cooked (not
raw), try the Creamy Crab or the
Snow Mountain Roll.
[Open
Mon.-Thurs. 11am-10pm;
Fri.&Sat.11am-11pm; and
Sunday 12noon-10pm.For more
information, call Wang's Table,
