300 Manufacturing Jobs Coming
to Haverhill
Brooks Brothers to make suits in Mill
City
HAVERHILL-
Lauding the addition of 300 new
manufacturing jobs, Mayor James J.
Fiorentini announced that Retail Brands
Alliance had been presented with a Tax
Increment Financing [TIF] agreement and a
building permit to make Brooks Brothers
suits and apparel. The former Southwick
Clothing Company moves its operations
from Lawrence and consolidates some
smaller Midwest divisions to 20 Computer
Drive in Haverhill, off Route 97. The
target date to begin operations at the
new state-of-the-art manufacturing
facility will be January, 2009. The TIF
agreement is before the city council
Tuesday night.
At a time when the countrys
employers are shedding manufacturing jobs
at a record clip, at a time when General
Motors is talking about not being able to
manufacture automobiles without a
bailout, we are extremely proud we were
able to bring over 300 such jobs to
Haverhill. noted Mayor Fiorentini.
The numbers of new jobs from Retail
Brands Alliance actually keep growing
every week.
Retail Brands Alliance turned down
an enticing offer to ship their jobs to
Asia; instead these quality suits will be
made by a well-trained workforce right
here in Haverhill, Massachusetts,
USA."
"Retail Brand Alliance did not
happen by accident. It took months of
dedication and hard work by the economic
development team, and it took personal
involvement by the Mayor to bring this
company to the city. When we heard they
were thinking about moving these jobs
from Lawrence to Asia, I personally got
on the phone and spoke with the
executives of Retail Brand Alliance and
with Southwick Clothing. Our economic
development director got into his car and
went to meet with them. We told them that
we would not red tape or regulatory
barriers to get into our way, we wanted
them here and we would expedite
permitting to make this happen."
"Retail Brand Alliance shows that
when red tape and regulatory barriers are
removed, when a city is aggressive about
recruiting business and is aggressive
about offering TIFs, that even in
this environment, it can happen. These
300 jobs keep 300 people employed, and
stop them from losing their homes. These
300 jobs are the best boost this area has
seen economically in many, many years. We
welcome them and look forward to working
with them.
With the issuance of the building permit,
work continues at a rapid pace at the 20
Computer Drive facility, hailed as one of
the showcase modern clothing production
facilities in the world. The company will
share the enormous building with Magellan
Aerospace.
The presence of Retail Brands
Alliance, Southwick Clothing and the
famous Brooks Brothers brand will also be
a source of great pride for city
residents, in addition to the tremendous
economic advantages, added the
Mayor.
Were moving full speed ahead
to get the facility open, and I look
forward to cutting the ribbon at the
facility in the near future, added
the Mayor.
