Why I’m Running for Re-election
to the Lawrence School Committee

Peter Larocque
(09/05/07)

First, let me say that it has been an honor and privilege to serve these last ten months as the Lawrence School Committee Member representing the parents and children along with all the rest of the good citizens of District E.

Now I am humbly asking the voters of District E to send me back to the Lawrence School Committee for a full two-year term. Since being sworn in last October I have been very busy doing the work that I believe has made the Lawrence Public Schools safer, more efficient and more parent friendly.

The first action I took as your School Committee Member was to call for a public forum on School Safety, which was held at the Lawrence High School Auditorium. This led to the establishment of the Lawrence School Safety Sub-Committee, which I also have been given the honor to chair. This School Safety Sub-Committee is made up of central office personnel, high school, middle school and elementary school principals and assistant principals. Also participating on the sub-committee are parents representing all three grade levels as well as students from the Lawrence High School Student Council. It has always been a platform of mine to have the Lawrence School Committee take a lesson from the Lawrence City Council, which operates with sub-committees to help in their way of governing.

With the use of sub-committees the issues that come before the Lawrence School Committee become more transparent for all to see. For instance we also established the Lawrence School Uniform Sub-Committee, which I am sure you are all aware of. Parents brought this issue before the school committee and as a parent it was an issue that I, along with my colleagues, unanimously approved. The Uniform Sub-Committee has the same make up of staff, parents and students as the School Safety Sub-Committee.

One of the accomplishments of the School Safety Sub-Committee this past school year was the establishment of an Action Plans that will immediately affect the Safety of the Lawrence Public Schools. One such plan is to have the Emergency & Crisis Response Plans for each school practiced just like we see fire drills practiced on a monthly basis.

As your school committee member, I also have not forgotten the Lawrence PTA which is where I began my involvement with the Lawrence Public School System when my children were students. There are three meetings per month that I make myself available for without hesitation. ( I attend more but for sure these three. And then, there are, of course, the Lawrence School Committee Meetings, the Lawrence School Safety Sub-Committee Meetings, and the President’s Council Meetings. The President’s Council Meetings are monthly meetings involving the presidents and other officers of all the school’s PTAs and the Lawrence School Superintendent.
At this meeting all the latest updates, progress reports and concerns are discussed between all those present. Each PTA Officer has the ear of the Superintendent and is able to share his or her issues that pertain to their school.

It is at this meeting I hear first-hand the concerns of parents and then I am able to make myself available to help where needed. Being a father of three, I am able to share my experience and give a voice to parent concerns and issues. I am also able to serve as a mediator between parents and the school administration if necessary. I would like to continue this service for the parents of District E. I bring leadership, experience and commitment to the district as a taxpaying homeowner to every vote I make.

I would like the privilege of receiving your vote on election day so that I can continue to pursue transparency, maintain fiscal responsibility and improve student achievement while giving parents a voice by bringing their concerns to the table and while keep Lawrence Public Schools safe for all students, teachers and staff. Yes, I know that there is much more work that needs to be done, but I am of the belief that together we can make Lawrence Public Schools second to none! Thank you again for your vote on election day!
