Local Family Hosts Fundraiser
to Benefit Merrimack Valley Hospice

Lawrence, Mass. –
A local family was so touched by the end of life services
their father, Richard Barker, received during the winter
of 2007 from Merrimack
Valley Hospice, they wanted to do something to give
back. The family was so grateful for the care
provided by Merrimack Valley Hospice that they planned a
fundraiser event in memory of their loved one to benefit
the non-profit organization.
Beth Torla, daughter of Richard and Constance Barker,
wife of Richard, held a Barbeque Birthday Party on
Sunday, June 30th at the Berkely Club in Lawrence in
memory of Richard. The family acquired product donations
and support for the event from several local businesses
including Haverhill Beef, the Berkeley Club, and Dube
Lock Company.
Funds were raised through a $10.00 suggested donation per
person attendance the event and through a raffle.
Over $4,000 was raised at the event to benefit patient
care at Merrimack Valley Hospice. The fundraising
event was so successful that the family plans to make
this Barbeque Birthday Party in Memory of Richard an
annual event.
“Every year, we have several community members help
us raise funds for Merrimack Valley Hospice that amount
to significant resources for the organization,” said
Janine Papesh, Manager of Development at Merrimack Valley
Hospice.
“We are so honored to be chosen by these families
and truly appreciate their efforts.”
