Mayor Manzi restricts use of
city vehicles, touts fuel savings
Mayor
William M. Manzi, today announced a new
policy regarding City-owned vehicles.
Starting today, employees who are
assigned take home vehicles may park
their vehicles at home at the end of the
workday only if they reside within 10
miles of the City limits. The mayor will
also review gasoline usage and mileage
monthly, and employees advised to
minimize travel and not to leave their
vehicles idling. The administration is
hopeful that the new policy will help to
control costs as gasoline and oil prices
continue to soar.
The
City has decided be proactive in the face
of rising energy costs. Small steps such
as decreasing travel miles and turning
vehicles off when they are not in use may
mean substantial savings and will help
the environment, Manzi said.
City Councilor Stephen N. Zanni agrees.
I fully support this new policy,
Zanni said. In a tough economy,
every cent matters. We owe it to the
taxpayers to insure that their money is
being spent wisely.
The mayor will monitor the policys
effectiveness and continue to look for
ways to reduce consumption.
Im looking into the
possibility of using electric zip
cars for routine employee travel
around Methuen, Manzi said. Im
also opened to further suggestions from
the City Council and the public.
