Governor Deval
Patrick's task force to demand removal of
ALL FLAGS from highway overpasses Masshighway
workers will be ordered to remove all
flag displys by May
Methuen, MA, March 4, 2008
-On Friday, February 29 - MassHighway
Commissioner Luisa Paiewonsky made a
surprise announcement to the Governors
task force and to other invited guest
(American Legion and AMVETS) that
Massachusetts will place a permanent ban
on American and military flags on highway
overpasses and stated that Governor
Patrick has agreed to the policy.
Welcome home banners will be allowed to
be placed for military members returning
from overseas but must be removed within
a few days otherwise MassHighway workers
will be ordered to remove them.
Another part of the policy states
Massachusetts will honor soldiers with a
designated sign only if they are a
high profiled case. This will mean if
a soldier comes back alive and did not
receive a lot of media coverage there
will be no banner or public
acknowledgment for his or her brave and
courageous service out of the normal
benefits. Rep. Verga has opposed this
policy and stated while there are
certainly some individuals whose service
is recognized more publicly in the media,
I hope all families will be given the
same opportunity to personally
recognize their solider.
Generic signage will also be placed
throughout the Commonwealth welcoming
home our troops and bumper stickers have
been made with the same message.
Jim Wareing stated, MassHighway
Commissioner Luisa Paiewonsky has driven
this policy to ban the American flag from
our highway overpasses for the third time
and should be removed as
Commissioner. This is a direct
attack on the American flag and an
assault on our Veterans.
Throughout our history over 1.2 million
men and women have died fighting for the
principles behind our American flag.

plans to fight this tooth and nail. You
