Congresswoman Tsongas Tours Fire Damage in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, MA - January 21, 2007 - Congresswoman Niki Tsongas released the following statement today after visiting the site of a devastating fire in Lawrence to view the damage, to visit with displaced families and business owners, to be briefed by the local and state officials at the scene on the extent of the damage, and to offer her assistance.

“I am extremely impressed by the rapid response of Mayor Michael Sullivan, Fire Chief Peter Takvorian, State Fire Marshal Steven Coan, Police Chief John Romero and their teams, the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Red Cross, and all of our emergency responders and local officials from Lawrence and the surrounding communities who responded to this devastating fire and continue to offer their resources to investigate the cause of this fire and to assist the many families that have been displaced.  Superintendent Wilfredo LaBoy and his staff should be commended for quickly opening up the South Lawrence East School to provide a temporary shelter for these families.

"These citizens have served their neighbors and friends time and time again with unwavering support and dedication.  We are all especially grateful to the officers and firefighters who went door to door in the middle of the night, evacuating homes and literally saving lives.  And, we are fortunate to live in such a compassionate community where already generous citizens have begun donating food and clothing to the displaced families.

“I will continue to stay in contact with state and local officials as well as appropriate federal agencies so that we can be a partner in the process of rebuilding, but it is clear that recovery from this fire will take some time.  I will do everything in my power to help the area recover as quickly as possible and to ensure that the residents and business owners have all of the support that they need, especially in the coming days."

Residents and business owners who are in need of help can call Congresswoman Tsongas' Lawrence office at (978) 681-6200.
