WEB EXTRA Tsongas Condemns Bush
Administration Plans to
Deny Health Care Coverage to Millions of Families Says
President is Out of Step with American People's
Priorities 1/4/08
WASHINGTON, DC
January 4, 2008 Congresswoman Niki Tsongas issued
the following statement on Bush Administration plans to
restrict states from expanding the eligibility for
Medicaid. The restrictions are similar to those the
administration attempted to place on the Children's
Health Insurance Program.
"With a stroke
of his pen, President Bush could have extended health
care to 10 million children - 200,000 of whom live right
here in Massachusetts. Instead, he has vetoed a
common-sense bill with strong bipartisan support, not
once -- but twice.
"Now, it seems that the President is taking his
inexcusable actions one step further by clamping down on
Medicaid eligibility. President Bush receives the
Cadillac of health insurance plans yet he is preventing
people who need it most from receiving the most basic
health care. I think that is wrong.
"The Massachusetts health care system relies on
federal funding to meet its goal of universal
coverage. Instead of working towards that same
goal, President Bush is content to go in the opposite
direction, effectively denying health care to millions of
hard-working families.
"I will continue to work with Democratic and
Republican leaders in Congress who are working to find a
solution to our broken health care system, instead of
holding the health and wellbeing of those who are most in
need of assistance in the balance."
