Rummaging Around the Christmas
Tree on Dec. 26th
Ted Tripp

After all the Christmas presents were opened this year I was cleaning up the wrapping paper, tissue and discarded bows when I saw something out of the corner of my eye. It was a wrinkled piece of paper partially hidden by all the trappings of Christmas. When I picked it up, I noticed that it was a “Dear Santa” letter with a wish list of items for Christmas. Since the letter was not under the tree prior to December 24th, I wistfully wondered if Santa had mistakenly dropped it when he came by Christmas Eve. Here is that letter in its entirety:

Dear Santa,

First of all, thank you for the combat boots and assault rifle you gave me last year. This year I have decided that I am not going to ask for something for myself or my mom and pop. Instead, I want you to bring your Christmas cheer to my town of North Andover. I therefore ask of you—

1. The gift of cooperation so that a diversity of people working together will make North Andover the best place in the country to live.

2. A gift of wisdom to our School Committee so that its members may overcome the mistaken belief that improved education results from more money and increased spending.

3. An additional gift of common sense to our School Committee, that its members assemble a responsible budget next year which they know the town can afford under Proposition 2 1/2.

4. The gift of restraint to our Board of Selectmen and the police and firefighter unions as they negotiate new contracts. All must understand that North Andover has limited resources and the taxpayers are tapped out.

5. Another gift of common sense, this time to our new Finance Committee, in that its members understand the folly of supporting a To Be Balanced budget and of putting off the tough financial decisions our town so desperately needs.

6. The gift of striving to be the best to our school administration and superintendent in their pursuit of academic excellence. Help them to understand the importance of scholastic goals and a plan to achieve them.

7. The gift of responsibility to Senator Baddour, Senator Tarr, Representative L’Italien and Representative Torrisi in how and when they vote on legislation important to the people of North Andover. Remind them of their oath to support the Massachusetts Constitution.

That’s all for now. Thank you Santa for whatever gifts you can bring to my town.

Tommy, Age 8 - Thomson School

Since this letter was left behind on Christmas Eve, it’s impossible to know whether or not Santa was able to deliver Tommy’s presents. Perhaps Santa was rushed this year and didn’t have time. Maybe Santa couldn’t find Tommy’s letter after leaving my house and didn’t know where to drop off the gifts.

Let’s hope that Santa was indeed able to complete his deliveries this year.
The proof will unfold in the coming months as town officials (with state legislator input) prepare their budgets for our annual town meeting in May.
In the meantime, Happy New Year everybody!
